Cape Egmont Lighthouse

Take a scenic detour off the coastal highway near New Plymouth to visit the historic Cape Egmont Lighthouse, standing proudly for nearly 150 years on Taranaki’s westernmost coastline.

A 40-minute drive from New Plymouth brings you to this landmark, offering breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea and the rugged coast.

Using passive, but effective, resistance the people of Parihaka managed to delay the erection of the lighthouse. 

In reply, the colonial authorities stationed about 40 members of the Armed Constabulary at the tower to ensure its completion. The light finally shone on 1 August 1881.

Originally built in London, the lighthouse was relocated to Cape Egmont in 1881 and automated in 1986. 

Today, it continues to guide ships with its flashing white light. Enjoy stunning photo opportunities with Mt. Taranaki in the background or the lighthouse framed by the sea.
