Dart River Adventures

Dart River Adventures is a popular tourism operator based in Glenorchy (about 45 minutes from Queenstown), New Zealand. It is the only company allowed to run commercial jet boat trips on the Dart River (Te Awa Whakatipu).

Owned by Ngāi Tahu Tourism, it has operated for over 30 years and focuses on authentic, sustainable experiences in the Te Wāhipounamu South West New Zealand UNESCO World Heritage Area and Mount Aspiring National Park.

The company offers two main experiences:

• Wilderness Jet Experience — A half-day trip featuring the region’s longest scenic jet boat ride. Guests travel along the braided, glacier-fed Dart River through towering mountains, ancient native beech forests, and dramatic landscapes (some used in The Lord of the Rings films). Knowledgeable local guides provide commentary on the natural environment, Māori heritage, and history. The jet boat portion lasts about 1–2 hours, with morning and afternoon departures. Suitable for ages 3+ (with height restrictions).
• Funyaks Experience — A full-day adventure that combines the jet boat ride upstream with a relaxed paddle downstream in stable inflatable canoes called Funyaks. Guests explore hidden side streams, rock pools, and dramatic chasms, then enjoy a wilderness picnic lunch. Return transport from Queenstown is included. Minimum age is 5 years; moderate fitness and water confidence are recommended.

Both trips highlight pristine scenery, crystal-clear water, and a mix of adrenaline and nature immersion.
