Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe), in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on New Zealand’s South Island West Coast, is a dramatic temperate maritime glacier flowing 12km from the Southern Alps into rainforest.

Its rapid movement creates stunning icefalls, crevasses, arches, and caves. Due to retreat and the 2019 landslide closing road access to the terminal, most immersive experiences now rely on helicopters.

Hiking & Valley Walks: Independent glacier walks are unavailable, but excellent short hikes offer superb views. The popular Fox Glacier South Side Walkway/Viewpoint Track (2.6km return, ~1hr, easy) winds through rainforest and moraine for direct glacier face vistas.

Other options include the Minnehaha Walk (short fern-filled loop with glowworms at night), Lake Matheson circuit (reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook), and Te Weheka Walkway.

Guided valley walks (~NZ$100–150) provide interpretation. Always check DOC alerts for conditions as conditions can change rapidly in winter.

Helicopter Flights: These deliver breathtaking aerial perspectives. Operators such as Glacier Helicopters offer:

Heli-Hikes: The premier adventure. The Flying Fox Heli-Hike (~4 hours total, 2–3 hours on ice, ~NZ$750–900) features two helicopter transfers, full gear (leather boots, crampons, poles, waterproofs), and expert guiding across remote pristine ice with caves and formations.

An Extreme All-Day option provides up to 7 hours on the glacier (~NZ$1,000+). Suitable for moderate fitness; minimum age typically 9–13; no experience required. Tours run multiple times daily in season but are highly weather-dependent.
