Omaru Falls is a beautiful 45-metre curtain waterfall near Piopio, between Te Kuiti and National Park Village. It is listed among New Zealand’s must-see waterfalls.
The short and easy walk to the falls starts just off State Highway 4. Drivers turn onto Omaru Road at the sign and follow the gravel road for about 700 metres to a small roadside car park with no facilities.
The track is a one-hour return walk. It begins across private farmland (visitors are asked to respect the property), then continues through the bush, over a suspension bridge, and alongside the river.
You pass interesting rock formations and rock pools before climbing a short hill to a DOC viewing platform. From here the waterfall can be seen clearly, although the base of the falls is not accessible.
Reviewers describe a pleasant woodland setting but note that the track can be muddy with exposed roots. Sturdy footwear and readiness for wet conditions are recommended.
The return journey is slightly easier and quicker.
