Tawhai Falls - Whakapapa

Tawhai Falls is a very picturesque waterfall in New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO Dual World Heritage site on the North Island’s Central Plateau.

Standing about 13 meters high—though some describe the main drop as around 5 meters—the falls tumble dramatically over the edge of an ancient lava flow into a plunge pool on the Whangapapanui Stream.

The short, easy Tawhai Falls Track (about 0.5–1 km return, 15–30 minutes) starts from a car park on SH48, roughly 4 km from Whakapapa Village.

It winds through lush mountain toatoa and beech forest, descending steps to excellent viewpoints near the top and lower riverbank.⁠

The location gained fame as “Gollum’s Pool” in The Lord of the Rings, where Gollum fishes under the watchful eyes of Faramir’s archers. Its cinematic beauty, framed by volcanic landscapes of Mt Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro, makes it a favourite quick stop for visitors.⁠

The track is family-friendly but requires care near slippery rocks and fast-flowing water, especially after rain when flooding can occur.

No dogs are allowed.
