Karangahake Gorge: A Day of Discovery

The Karangahake Gorge offers a full day of exploration with its rich history and stunning scenery.

Historical Highlights:

• Gold and Silver Riches: The area was a major gold and silver mining hub. The Talisman Mine, established in 1894 and expanded in 1904, extracted 3,500,000 ounces (96 tonnes) of gold before its closure in 1920. The Waihi area, from 1882 to 1954, produced £31,403,981 worth of gold, with the Martha Mine alone yielding 174 tonnes of gold and 1,193 tonnes of silver. At its peak, this region contributed 60% of New Zealand’s gold production.

Activities and Attractions:

Mining Remnants: Explore the remains of the Woodstock Battery and other mining relics. Enjoy walks along the Waitawheta River, which lead to several mining tunnels that you can enter. Trails range from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Bush Railway: Take a scenic bush railway trip from Waikino. The East Coast Main Trunk Railway once traversed the gorge, but now the 1100-metre tunnel is part of the Hauraki Rail Trail, combining a walkway and cycleway. The Waikino railhead is preserved as part of the Goldfields Railway to Waihi.

Waterfalls: Don’t miss the Waitawheta and Dickey Flat Waterfalls, which add to the natural beauty of the area.

Waihi Township: After exploring the gorge, take a short walk to the Martha Gold Mine Pit in Waihi. Discover the history through storyboards along the main street and visit the Historic Pumphouse.
