The Pancake Rocks

Situated midway between Westport and Greymouth, this is one of the wonders of nature. Till you see it, you won’t believe it. This limestone landscape of pancaked rocks, blowholes and surge pools is simply amazing and it’s all accessible on well-made paths suitable for wheelchairs. No excuse not to spend an hour or two enjoying the incredible views. 

It’s 100km from Westport to Greymouth and a beautiful day’s drive feasting on the sights. 

• Westport has the Denniston Mine, which is well worth a visit. Maybe even go up to Stockton for a look as well. Go for a drive out to the bar at Westport.
• Visit Tauranga Bay and see the Fur Seal colony.
• The Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and walks
• On your way south look for Mitchells Gully Mine. Still run by the original family that opened it in 1866 with so much restored to look at. In my opinion it’s one of the best examples in New Zealand of early Gold Mining.
• When you finally get to Greymouth a whole new adventure starts.

The West Coast is a truly wonderful place. “Coasters” are so friendly, you simply wouldn’t think you were still in New Zealand. In just this 100km journey there is so much to see, so don’t sell yourself short. Allow time, be it on business or pleasure to be able to stop and experience the wonders of the Coast.
